Stay Safe at Home

Don't take chances with electric safety when you work outdoors around your home. There is just one rule about power lines and other electrical equipment — stay away. Always assume all lines are live and dangerous.

If you have questions about the wires outside your home, please call SHELD at 413-535-1050 for advice before you begin working around them. We’ll be happy to take a look and give you advice on how to stay safe.

Call before you dig

Before you begin any project that includes digging, call Dig Safe at 1-888-DIG-SAFE (1-888-344-7233) to find out what you need to avoid underground.

Damaging buried lines could cut service for electricity, gas, water, telephone and more. Even worse, someone could be seriously injured. Call Dig Safe first, and they'll notify area utilities who will mark the locations of underground lines. You can also make Dig Safe requests online at www.digsafe.com.

Planning home improvements?

Please call SHELD before you make home improvements that will increase your electricity use. We may need to upgrade the electrical equipment serving your home to meet your new power needs.

New large appliances, central air conditioning, a swimming pool or a home addition are all common changes that can dramatically affect the amount of electricity your home requires. To avoid outages, we need to make sure our equipment is properly sized.

Also, remember to keep structures, landscaping, or any objects at least 10 feet away from electrical equipment such as transformers. If you’re unsure, call us for advice.
