Start or Stop Service
To start service call us at 413-536-1050 or drop by our office at 85 Main St., South Hadley. Our office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays. There is no fee for initiating or canceling an account.
All customers must complete and sign a service application either by mail, fax or in person at our office. In addition to your signature, you will need to provide your Social Security number and a driver’s license or photo i.d.
Buying? Please sign up at least three working days before the closing so that we can create a final bill for the seller.
Renting? We’ll need at least one day’s notice before you would like your service to start. In most instances, service can start within 24 hours, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
Security deposits. If you are the property owner and personally sign for the electric service you will not be required to post a security deposit. SHELD requires a $50.00 deposit from residential accounts and a $100.00 deposit from residential electric heat accounts if you are not the record owner of the property. If you have an outstanding balance from another SHELD account, you must make arrangements to pay that balance before new service is started. To stop service or close your account, you'll need to visit our office at 85 Main St., South Hadley, fax us the disconnect information, or send us a letter. Be sure to give us a forwarding address where we can send your final bill, or any possible refund.
If you are selling your home, we will need at least three working days notice before the closing so that we can create a final bill. A word of caution — billing will remain in your name until a written notice to terminate is received by our office.
If you need your electric meter moved in order to complete a project such as residing your home, call us at 413-536-1050 and SHELD will unlock the electric meter to allow your electrician to move it. Meter locations must be approved by SHELD. Please see SHELD's Information and Requirements for Electric Service booklet for more information.
If you are leaving for a long period of time and want your gas or electric service disconnected, you must make a written request and sign a waiver either by mail, fax or in person at our office. When service is resumed, there is no fee for this service.
