Avoid Scams Claiming to be from SHELD

June 14, 2017

There have been a number of telephone calls to Light Department customers threatening to shut off their power unless immediate payment is made.

These calls do not come from us, and they are not authorized by us.

We operate under strict guidelines set by the D.P.U. (Department of Public Utilities). These guidelines require several written notifications (not phone calls) before power is shut off.

Some scammers are sophisticated and leave a telephone number. When that number is called, they answer as though they represent SHELD. If you get one of these calls, hang up and call us right away.

Some scammers pretend to be extending a special offer to senior citizens, then ask for confidential information such as social security numbers.

Sometimes scammers say they’re from the Light Department and offer products: we don’t offer LED lights or other products over the phone.

If you get one of these calls, do not give out your credit card numbers or any other personal information. When in doubt, call us at 413-536-1050 to verify you have been contacted by a legitimate representative of SHELD.
